Group Projects

February is African American History month, so we took this opportunity to learn about some of America's most influential African Americans.  Last week, students paired up and researched either Harriet Tubman or Frederick Douglass.  They read an article about their person, picked out the most important information, wrote an informative paragraph, and then presented it to their classmates.  Everyone did a wonderful job!

Frederick was a slave.  Frederick was sent to Baltimore.  Frederick escaped and he went to Bedford, Massachusetss.  Frederick was hired to speak in groups of slaves.  Frederick got friends to raise money to buy his freedom.  Frederick returned to the United States.  He lived in Rochester.  Southern slaves escaped to freedom in the North.

Harriet Tubman was a great American.  She helped a lot of slaves escape.  She was a famous leader of the underground railroad.  Harriet was a slave, but escaped.  In part of the Civil War she freed more than 750 slaves.  She was a nurse, scout, and spy for the Union Army.  Harriet freed many slaves.

Christmas Party

I hope you've had a wonderful break!  I'm excited about the second half of second grade!  We have so many exciting things coming up this spring!

Before we left for break, we had a really fun Christmas party!  Students rotated through all three second grade classrooms and did different activities in each room.  They made reindeer cupcakes and played a game in Mrs Crews' room and heard a story and made reindeer antlers in Mrs. Mann's classroom.  In our room, we decorated Christmas tree cookies and made cards for people who live in nursing homes.

After lunch, we snuggled with our blankets and stuffed animals and watched The Polar Express in the gym with kindergarten and first grade.  It was such a fun day!

Happy Thanksgiving!

I hope you had a wonderful Thanksgiving!  Last Wednesday, we participated in a couple of fun activities to celebrate the holiday.

First up:  We made pumpkin pie!

After enjoying our snack, we headed to Mrs. Gentry's fifth grade class for buddy games.  All of the Super Smart Second Graders were paired with a fifth grade buddy for games and activities.
