Fluency Poems

We have been working hard on our fluency in class.  Fluent readers can read smoothly and quickly (we say that fluent readers sound like they are just talkin) and know the words on the page.  Fluency is important because it leads to better comprehension (the whole point of reading!).  Because the student isn't so focused on decoding individual words, he or she can devote more brain power to using strategies that help him or her understand and remember the text (like making connections, and visualizing, and asking questions...).

To practice fluency, we practiced and performed poems from the book titled You Read to Me, I'll Read to You by Mary Ann Hoberman.  After practicing each day (because re-reading is a powerful fluency improver), the students performed their poems on Friday.  Take a look!
